Why work? And why work hard? A contemporary film maker once said that when he wakes up in the morning his mind is like a jar full of ball bearings rolling around, a million ideas going through his head of what he wants to do that day and with the film he is currently directing. Motivated? Some might say he is obsessed. But there is more to it than simple being a workaholic. It has to do with one’s work ethic. Typically entrepreneurs are highly motivated and for multiple reasons including the fun of being captain of one’s own ship. But the question of what makes an entrepreneur “tick” or anyone else for that matter is an important one. The technical term for this is “work ethic.” The term needs to be distinguished from work ethics or ethical issues in the workplace. Work ethic gets at the guts of the matter: Why work? Why work as one does? Why do some not “get into” their work? Why are some fully engaged? Why work well?
